Dear Alumni and Friends,

Greetings from Hamilton Hall! As acting chair of the History Department for the current academic year, it is my pleasure to share with you the Fall issue of The Department Historian and to acknowledge the hard work of two graduate students in the department, Luke Jeske and Aubrey Lauersdorf, in putting it together. This newsletter showcases many of the exciting events and accomplished historians who contribute to the life of the department.

UNC historians have continued to distinguish themselves at the local, state, national, and international levels this year. From undergraduates who have taken their research public to graduate students making their marks to senior faculty who continue to shape vital public discussions, we have been an active community. My colleagues have undertaken important research, published award-winning books and articles, taught and studied in fascinating courses, and received widespread acclaim.

This issue of The Department Historian features fascinating stories of research adventures, including by our hardworking newsletter editor Professor Eren Tasar, as well as the tremendous work of our talented undergraduates. It also spotlights the vital public service of teacher-scholars like Professor William Sturkey, whose fall semester course on Race and Memory at UNC formed a cornerstone of Carolina’s new initiative called Reckoning: Race, Memory, and Reimagining the Public University and made the department extremely proud. For more, please see our website, at https://history.unc.edu/.

Much of what we do would be impossible without the generous support of our friends and alumni. In the last year, private support enabled us to:

  • Recruit and retain outstanding professors in key areas of specialty
  • Fund new research opportunities for undergraduates, graduate students, and faculty
  • Send students and faculty to present their research at national and international conferences
  • Develop and sustain historical resources for the general public.

I hope you will consider making a gift today and help us continue our tradition of excellence that is History at UNC.

Gratefully yours,

Benjamin C. Waterhouse
